Best Mobile Device Management Software in 2026: 12 tools compared

Finding the best MDM software starts with the devices you actually manage. A company with only iPhones and Macs needs a different tool than one with Android scanners, Windows laptops and kiosks. This page covers twelve MDM platforms and shows which one fits best for small teams, Apple fleets, Microsoft 365 shops, rugged Android devices and larger mixed environments.

We compared the tools on operating system coverage, enrollment, security policies, app control, remote actions, identity integration and how clearly each vendor publishes its prices. Because per-device, per-user and quote-based pricing behave very differently as fleets grow, the page also shows what each MDM really costs.

What is mobile device management software?

MDM software, short for mobile device management, lets IT enroll, configure, secure and monitor company and employee devices such as phones, tablets and laptops. Day to day, admins push Wi-Fi and security settings, distribute apps, enforce passcodes and encryption, and lock or wipe a device when it is lost. Small IT teams, schools, retailers and large enterprises all use it. Many products now cover laptops and desktops as well and are called UEM, for unified endpoint management. The defining capabilities are enrollment, policy enforcement, app distribution and remote actions.

How to choose the best MDM software

Begin with an honest device inventory: which operating systems you run, who owns the devices and how many you expect in two years. Then decide how devices will be enrolled, since shipping them pre-configured saves the most IT time. Check that the security policies you need are in the plan you would buy, not a higher tier. Finally, test with a handful of real devices, including a remote lock and wipe, before you roll the tool out to everyone.

OS and device coverage

This is about which devices the tool can manage and how deeply. Apple-only, Android-heavy and mixed fleets need different tools. Strong platforms cover iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and sometimes Linux or ChromeOS with policy depth on each. Weak ones list an operating system but offer only basic controls, so verify the features per platform.

  • ManageEngine MDM Plus: IOS, iPadOS, Android, Windows, macOS, tvOS, ChromeOS (FAQ)
  • Mosyle: MacOS, iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, tvOS, watchOS (Apple only)
  • Microsoft Intune: Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android (Enterprise and AOSP), Linux (Ubuntu 24.04/26.04, RHEL 9/10), ChromeOS.
  • Jamf Pro: MacOS, iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, watchOS, tvOS; Android via Jamf for Mobile.
  • Hexnode: Mobile in all tiers; Windows and macOS management arrives in Enterprise (basic) and Ultimate/Ultra.

Zero-touch enrollment

Zero-touch enrollment lets devices ship straight from the vendor and configure themselves when first switched on. It relies on Apple Business Manager, Android Enterprise and Windows Autopilot. Strong tools support all three that match your fleet. Weak ones need IT to touch each device, which does not scale beyond a few dozen.

  • ManageEngine MDM Plus: Apple Business Manager and Android Zero Touch Enrollment (FAQ)
  • Microsoft Intune: Apple automated device enrollment, Android Enterprise, Windows Autopilot, Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment (per Microsoft docs)
  • Jamf Pro: Apple Business Manager / automated enrollment (standard for Jamf; not itemized on pricing page)
  • Hexnode: Apple Business Manager, Android Enterprise, ZTE Knox in Pro; Windows Autopilot in Ultimate.
  • Omnissa Workspace One: Vendor mentions zero-touch onboarding in automated lifecycle workflows.

Security policy and compliance enforcement

Security policies set passcodes, encryption, restrictions and compliance rules, and block access when a device falls out of compliance. Strong platforms combine these with conditional access and automated remediation. Weak ones only apply static settings. Check which controls, such as disk encryption, are limited to higher tiers.

  • Mosyle: Endpoint security in Fuse (feature mapping not confirmed by the vendor)
  • Microsoft Intune: Compliance policies and conditional access with Entra ID; app protection policies not supported on ChromeOS.
  • Jamf Pro: Endpoint protection and mobile threat defense bundled in plans.
  • Hexnode: BitLocker only in Ultra; FileVault in Ultimate.
  • JumpCloud: Conditional access / zero trust module $3 per user.

App distribution and management

App management covers pushing required apps, blocking unwanted ones and updating software silently. Strong tools offer an app catalog, managed app configuration and patching for desktops. Weak ones only deploy basic mobile apps. Check whether desktop app management and hosted catalogs are included or sold as add-ons.

  • Mosyle: Apps and patch management listed on pricing page.
  • Microsoft Intune: App deployment; Enterprise Application Management add-on ($2.00/user/month) adds a hosted app catalog.
  • Jamf Pro: App distribution included in Jamf Now; broader catalog not confirmed by the vendor.
  • Hexnode: Mobile app management in Pro; Windows/Mac app management in Ultimate.
  • JumpCloud: Software management not priced on page.

Remote lock, wipe and support

Remote actions limit the damage from lost or stolen devices and help users in the field. Lock, wipe and locate are the baseline, and remote view or control helps with support tickets. Strong platforms include these in the main plan. Others sell remote support as a separate paid add-on.

  • Microsoft Intune: Remote Help is a paid add-on ($3.50/user/month); standard remote lock/wipe not confirmed by the vendor.
  • Hexnode: Remote view from Enterprise (mobile) and Ultimate (desktop); remote control from Ultimate (mobile) and Ultra (desktop)
  • 42Gears SureMDM: SureAccess remote access add-on, $1.99 per device per month (third-party)
  • JumpCloud: Remote Access module $3 per user.
  • IBM MaaS360: TeamViewer remote support is a paid add-on on Essentials to Enterprise.

Identity and Microsoft 365 integration

Identity integration connects device state to who can access company data. Strong tools work with Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, Google Workspace or Okta, so only compliant devices get in. Weak ones keep device and user records separate. If you run Microsoft 365, check how deeply conditional access is supported.

  • ManageEngine MDM Plus: Active Directory integration via Zoho Directory Sync connector (cloud)
  • Mosyle: Okta and Ping SSO on admin portals (2021 report); macOS identity and SSO in Fuse.
  • Microsoft Intune: Native with Microsoft Entra ID; Entra is an implicit dependency.
  • Jamf Pro: SAML and OIDC admin SSO; Jamf Connect for identity (separate)
  • Hexnode: Entra ID, Active Directory, Google Workspace directory integrations from Enterprise.

Pricing model and real cost

MDM vendors charge per device, per user or by quote, and add-ons for remote support, security or identity can raise the total. Check device minimums, annual-only billing and tier limits, and calculate the cost at your fleet size rather than the starting price.

  • ManageEngine MDM Plus: Device-count bands plus technician licenses.
  • Mosyle: Per device, Apple-only.
  • Microsoft Intune: Per user per month; standalone Plan 1 $8.00; most buyers get it inside M365 E3/E5.
  • Jamf Pro: Per device, quote-based; Jamf Now for orgs under 25 employees.
  • Hexnode: Per device per month, tiered by feature set.

Target company size

Tools built for a ten-person team and for a thousand-person company differ in admin controls, support and tiers. Small teams need simple setup and clear prices, while larger ones need role-based admin, audit logs and partner support. Match the vendor's usual customer size to yours.

  • ManageEngine MDM Plus: Small to mid-size; free for 25 devices, bands up to 10,000.
  • Mosyle: Small business and education.
  • Microsoft Intune: Any size; strongest fit for Microsoft 365 organizations.
  • Jamf Pro: Jamf Now under 25 employees; Jamf for Mac/Mobile for mid-size and enterprise.
  • Hexnode: Small to mid-size (starts at 15 devices); MSP edition available.

What mobile device management software really costs

What mobile device management software costs per year for your size

For 100 devices on the cheapest plan that fits, Mosyle costs $1,200 a year and 42Gears SureMDM $4,788. Pick your own size: the order changes because free plans end, plans have user caps and per-device prices multiply differently.

How far each price can climb

The entry price is rarely what you pay once the team needs more. Each line runs from a tool's cheapest paid plan to its most expensive published plan. IBM MaaS360 grows 6.4x from $1.5 to $9.54, Scalefusion 6.2x.

  1. IBM MaaS360Fast Start $1.5 to Enterprise $9.54 per device per month6.4x

How MDM pricing works

MDM pricing comes in a few distinct models, and the one a vendor chooses changes what happens to your bill as the company grows. Some tools publish clear per-device rates, others require a quote, and several list prices only through third parties or resellers. The patterns below are the ones that most often cause surprises when a fleet grows, a device mix changes or a contract renews.

  1. Per device versus per user

Per-device pricing, as in Mosyle, SureMDM and MaaS360, grows with hardware. Per-user pricing, as in Intune and JumpCloud, grows with headcount. A person with three devices costs three times more under per-device models, so compare using your real devices per employee.

  2. Free tiers with hard caps

Mosyle is free up to 30 devices and ManageEngine MDM Plus up to 25. These are real options for tiny fleets, but crossing the cap moves you to paid pricing. Plan for the day you hit the limit.

  3. Modular add-ons

Scalefusion lists identity at 4 to 5 dollars and security modules at 3 to 4 dollars per device on top of a 2 dollar base. Intune sells Remote Help at 3.50 and Endpoint Privilege Management at 3.00. A bundle of add-ons can exceed the base license.

  4. Annual terms and reseller contracts

Scalefusion UEM plans are annual only, and Workspace One is sold in prepaid 12, 24 or 36 month terms via resellers. You pay for capacity you may not use if your fleet shrinks.

  5. Quote-only and third-party prices

Jamf Pro and NinjaOne do not publish full price lists, and SureMDM prices in this list come from third-party listings. Treat those numbers as estimates and confirm in writing before budgeting.

Costs that are easy to miss

Add-ons, usage fees and premium modules often decide the real bill. These are the paid extras the vendors list themselves.

  • ManageEngine MDM PlusExtra technicians from $445 per year (cloud annual)
  • Microsoft IntunePlan 2 $4.00; Remote Help $3.50; Endpoint Privilege Management $3.00
  • Jamf ProJamf Premium Services for onboarding (price not published); Premium Cloud hosting option
  • 42Gears SureMDMSureAccess $1.99 per device per month; SureIdP $3.49 per user per month
  • NinjaOneMDM listed as a separate selectable product
  • JumpCloudPremium Support $2 per user; Directory Insights $3; Patch Management $3
  • ScalefusionOneIdP Access Core $4 / Pro $5 per device per month; Veltar Security Core $3 / Pro $4; Secure Web Gateway +$2
  • IBM MaaS360TeamViewer remote support (price not published); Mobile Threat Defense (price not published)

Our recommendation

Choose the MDM that supports the operating systems you run, enrolls devices without hands-on work and keeps your security rules in the plan you can afford. Test two or three tools with a few real devices, including remote lock and wipe. To keep cost under control, price each option at your fleet size in two years and check which add-ons you really need.

ManageEngine MDM Plus is free for up to 25 devices, and Mosyle is free for up to 30 Apple devices. Hexnode, Scalefusion and Miradore are also aimed at small and mid-size fleets, with per-device pricing starting at about $2.

What is the difference between MDM and UEM?

MDM focuses on phones and tablets, while UEM, or unified endpoint management, covers laptops and desktops as well. Many tools that started as MDM, such as Intune, Hexnode and IBM MaaS360, now manage all endpoints, so the terms are often used interchangeably.

Do I need MDM if I have Microsoft 365?

If you have Microsoft 365 E3 or E5, Intune Plan 1 is already included, so you may not need a separate tool. Apple-heavy teams, Android kiosk fleets or companies on lower Microsoft plans often choose a dedicated MDM instead.

Which MDM is best for Apple devices?

Jamf Pro is widely seen as the standard for Apple management and suits larger fleets with a Mac admin. Mosyle manages Apple devices only and is free for up to 30 devices, which makes it a good fit for schools and small businesses.

Published prices start around $1 to $2.20 per device per month for Mosyle, IBM MaaS360 Fast Start and Hexnode. Intune costs $8 per user per month standalone, and Jamf, Omnissa and NinjaOne use quotes. Add-ons for remote support or identity can raise the total.
